📝 Essential Grammar Patterns

Meaning: to the extent that, so... that
Usage: Verb/Adj + ほど

Examples:
涙が出るほど嬉しい。
I'm so happy that tears come out.

死ぬほど疲れた。
I'm tired to death (extremely tired).

信じられないほど美しい。
Beautiful to an unbelievable extent.

Pattern: 〜ば〜ほど (the more... the more...)
勉強すればするほど、難しくなる。
The more you study, the more difficult it becomes.

Meaning: nothing but, only, just
Usage: Verb(て form) + ばかり

Examples:
遊んでばかりいる。
Do nothing but play.

文句を言ってばかりいる。
Do nothing but complain.

失敗してばかりだ。
I do nothing but fail.

Special form: 〜たばかり (just finished)
今、起きたばかりだ。
I just woke up now.

Meaning: only, and no more; since then
Usage: Noun/Number + きり, Verb(た) + きり

Examples:
一度会ったきり、連絡がない。
Since meeting once, there's been no contact.

彼は出かけたきり帰ってこない。
He went out and hasn't come back since.

これきりです。
This is all. (no more)

Meaning: so much that, due to excess
Usage: Verb(plain) + あまり, Noun + の + あまり

Examples:
嬉しさのあまり、泣いてしまった。
I was so happy that I cried.

心配のあまり、眠れなかった。
I was so worried that I couldn't sleep.

驚きのあまり、言葉が出なかった。
I was so surprised that words wouldn't come out.

Meaning: as it is, unchanged state, while
Usage: Verb(た) + まま, Noun + の + まま

Examples:
窓を開けたまま寝た。
I slept with the window open (left as is).

靴を履いたまま入ってはいけない。
You mustn't enter while wearing shoes.

子供のままの心を持っている。
Has a child-like heart (unchanged from childhood).

Meaning: left undone, left in that state (negative nuance)
Usage: Verb(masu stem) + っぱなし

Examples:
電気をつけっぱなしにした。
I left the lights on.

ドアを開けっぱなしだ。
The door is left open.

仕事を出しっぱなしにしている。
Work is left spread out (messy).

Meaning: while doing (formal), although
Usage: Verb(masu stem) + つつ

Examples:
音楽を聞きつつ、勉強する。
Study while listening to music.

悪いと知りつつ、やってしまった。
Although I knew it was bad, I did it.

時代は変わりつつある。
Times are changing (in progress).

Meaning: tend to, have a tendency to (usually negative)
Usage: Verb(masu stem) + がちだ, Noun + がちだ

Examples:
彼は遅刻しがちだ。
He tends to be late.

病気がちで学校を休むことが多い。
I'm often sick and frequently absent from school.

雨の日は憂鬱になりがちだ。
On rainy days, one tends to feel depressed.

Meaning: nothing but, merely, only (downplaying)
Usage: Verb/Noun/Adj + に過ぎない

Examples:
これは冗談に過ぎない。
This is nothing but a joke.

それは噂に過ぎない。
That's merely a rumor.

私は学生に過ぎない。
I'm merely a student.

Similar but different nuance:

に過ぎない (formal, downplaying):
彼は子供に過ぎない。
He's merely a child. (dismissive)

だけだ (neutral, simple limitation):
彼は子供だけだ。
He's just a child. (neutral)

に過ぎない is more formal and often used to 
diminish importance or significance.

Meaning: it means that, naturally follows, no wonder
Usage: Verb/Adj(plain) + わけだ

Examples:
彼は医者だ。だから忙しいわけだ。
He's a doctor. That's why he's busy (naturally).

毎日練習した。上手になったわけだ。
I practiced every day. No wonder I got better.

みんな知っている。有名なわけだ。
Everyone knows. That's why it's famous.

Negative: 〜わけではない (it doesn't mean that)
嫌いなわけではない。
It doesn't mean I dislike it.

Meaning: cannot afford to, shouldn't
Usage: Verb(dictionary) + わけにはいかない

Examples:
約束したから、行かないわけにはいかない。
I made a promise, so I can't not go.

先生の前で、嘘をつくわけにはいかない。
I can't lie in front of the teacher.

責任があるから、逃げるわけにはいかない。
I have responsibility, so I can't run away.

Two main meanings:

1. Typical of, befitting (noun + らしい)
彼は男らしい。
He's manly (typical of a man).

春らしい天気だ。
It's spring-like weather.

子供らしく遊ぶ。
Play like a child (in a childlike way).

2. Seems like, apparently (hearsay)
雨が降るらしい。
It seems it will rain (I heard).

彼は忙しいらしい。
He seems to be busy (apparently).

Meaning: seems like, -ish, has characteristics of
Usage: Noun + っぽい, Verb(masu stem) + っぽい

Examples:
子供っぽい。
Childish.

忘れっぽい。
Forgetful (tends to forget).

この色は青っぽい。
This color is bluish.

怒りっぽい人だ。
A person who gets angry easily.

Meaning: a touch of, slightly (often negative/undesirable)
Usage: Noun + 気味, Verb(masu stem) + 気味

Examples:
風邪気味だ。
I have a slight cold.

太り気味だ。
I'm slightly overweight.

疲れ気味で調子が悪い。
I'm a bit tired and not feeling well.

Meaning: no way to, cannot possibly
Usage: Verb(masu stem) + ようがない

Examples:
連絡先を知らないから、連絡しようがない。
I don't know the contact info, so there's no way to contact.

どこにあるか分からないから、探しようがない。
I don't know where it is, so there's no way to search.

説明できない。言いようがない。
I can't explain it. There's no way to say it.

Meaning: cannot help but, have no choice but (formal)
Usage: Verb(negative stem) + ざるを得ない
Special: する → せざるを得ない

Examples:
事実を認めざるを得ない。
I have no choice but to acknowledge the facts.

辞職せざるを得ない状況だ。
It's a situation where I must resign.

この条件を受け入れざるを得ない。
I have no choice but to accept these conditions.

Meaning: triggered by, taking the opportunity of
Usage: Noun + をきっかけに(して)

Examples:
この事件をきっかけに、法律が変わった。
Triggered by this incident, the law changed.

彼との出会いをきっかけに、人生が変わった。
Taking the opportunity of meeting him, my life changed.

結婚をきっかけにして、タバコをやめた。
Taking marriage as the opportunity, I quit smoking.
