Sentence patterns are fixed grammatical structures that convey specific meanings. Mastering these patterns allows you to express complex ideas naturally and understand Japanese at an intermediate level. This section covers essential N3-level sentence patterns used frequently in daily communication.

N3 Sentence Pattern Types:

1. Expressions of State/Appearance:
   - そうだ (looks like, seems)
   - ようだ (it seems, appears)
   - らしい (seems, apparently)
   - みたいだ (like, seems - casual)

2. Giving/Receiving Patterns:
   - てあげる (do for someone)
   - てくれる (someone does for me)
   - てもらう (receive favor)
   - てくださる (honorific - do for me)

3. Experience & Trial:
   - たことがある (have experienced)
   - てみる (try doing)
   - ことにする (decide to)
   - ことになる (it's been decided)

4. State Continuation:
   - たまま (remain in state)
   - っぱなし (left in state)
   - ている (ongoing state/action)
   - てある (state resulting from action)

5. Listing & Examples:
   - し (and, also - multiple reasons)
   - たり～たり (do things like)
   - など (and so on, etc.)
   - とか (and, or - casual listing)

📚 Pattern Details & Usage

Pattern 1: そうだ (Appearance)

Formation:
• い-adjective (drop い) + そうだ
• な-adjective + そうだ
• Verb (masu stem) + そうだ

Meaning: "looks like", "seems", "appears"

Examples:
• おいしそうな料理ですね。
　(That looks like delicious food.)

• 雨が降りそうです。
　(It looks like it will rain.)

• この問題は難しそうだ。
　(This problem looks difficult.)

• 彼は元気そうに見える。
　(He looks healthy/energetic.)

Exceptions:
• いい → よさそう (good-looking)
• ない → なさそう (doesn't seem to exist)

Pattern 2: ようだ (Seems/Appears)

Formation:
• Verb (plain form) + ようだ
• い-adjective + ようだ
• な-adjective + な + ようだ
• Noun + の + ようだ

Meaning: "it seems", "it appears", "like"

Examples:
• 彼は日本人のようだ。
　(He seems to be Japanese.)

• 雨が降ったようですね。
　(It seems like it rained.)

• この本は面白いようです。
　(This book seems interesting.)

• 夢のような話だ。
　(It's a dream-like story.)

Pattern 3: らしい (Apparently)

Formation:
• Verb (plain form) + らしい
• い-adjective + らしい
• な-adjective + らしい
• Noun + らしい

Meaning: "apparently", "seems" (based on information)

Examples:
• 明日は雨らしい。
　(Apparently it will rain tomorrow.)

• 彼は病気らしいです。
　(It seems he's sick.)

• このレストランは有名らしい。
　(This restaurant is apparently famous.)

• 学生らしい服装
　(student-like clothing/typical student attire)

Pattern 4: てあげる (Do for Someone)

Formation:
• Verb (て form) + あげる

Meaning: "do (something) for (someone)"
Direction: I/we → others (giving)

Examples:
• 友達に本を貸してあげた。
　(I lent a book to my friend.)

• 妹に日本語を教えてあげます。
　(I'll teach Japanese to my younger sister.)

• 手伝ってあげましょうか。
　(Shall I help you?)

Note: Can sound patronizing if used improperly

Pattern 5: てくれる (Someone Does for Me)

Formation:
• Verb (て form) + くれる

Meaning: "(someone) does (something) for me/us"
Direction: Others → me/us (receiving)

Examples:
• 友達が手伝ってくれた。
　(My friend helped me.)

• 先生が説明してくれました。
　(The teacher explained it for us.)

• 母が料理を作ってくれます。
　(My mother makes food for me.)

• 教えてくれてありがとう。
　(Thank you for teaching me.)

Pattern 6: てもらう (Receive Favor)

Formation:
• Verb (て form) + もらう

Meaning: "receive the favor of", "have someone do"
Direction: Me/us receiving action from others

Examples:
• 友達に手伝ってもらった。
　(I had my friend help me.)

• 先生に推薦状を書いてもらいました。
　(I had the teacher write a recommendation.)

• 母に駅まで送ってもらう。
　(I'll have my mother take me to the station.)

Particle: Use に for the person doing the action

Pattern 7: たことがある (Have Experience)

Formation:
• Verb (た form) + ことがある

Meaning: "have done before", "have the experience of"

Examples:
• 富士山に登ったことがあります。
　(I have climbed Mt. Fuji before.)

• この映画を見たことがありますか。
　(Have you seen this movie before?)

• 納豆を食べたことがない。
　(I've never eaten natto.)

• 一度だけ会ったことがある。

Pattern 8: てみる (Try Doing)

Formation:
• Verb (て form) + みる

Meaning: "try doing", "do and see"

Examples:
• この料理を食べてみたい。
　(I want to try eating this dish.)

• 新しい方法を使ってみましょう。
　(Let's try using a new method.)

• 漢字を書いてみてください。
　(Please try writing the kanji.)

• もう一度考えてみます。
　(I'll try thinking about it once more.)

Pattern 9: ことにする/ことになる (Decision/Decided)

Formation:
• Verb (plain form) + ことにする (decide to)
• Verb (plain form) + ことになる (it's decided)

Meaning:
• ことにする = decide to do
• ことになる = it's been decided (external decision)

Examples - ことにする:
• 留学することにしました。
　(I decided to study abroad.)

• タバコをやめることにした。
　(I decided to quit smoking.)

Examples - ことになる:
• 来月転勤することになりました。
　(It's been decided I'll transfer next month.)

• 会議は中止になった。
　(The meeting was canceled / It was decided to cancel.)

Pattern 10: たまま (Remain in State)

Formation:
• Verb (た form) + まま
• Noun + の + まま

Meaning: "remain as is", "leave unchanged"

Examples:
• 電気をつけたまま寝てしまった。
　(I fell asleep with the light still on.)

• 靴を履いたまま入らないでください。
　(Please don't enter with your shoes on.)

• 立ったまま話しています。
　(They're talking while standing.)

• そのままにしておいてください。
　(Please leave it as it is.)

Pattern 11: し (Multiple Reasons)

Formation:
• Verb/Adjective (plain form) + し
• Can list multiple reasons with し

Meaning: "and", "also" (listing reasons)

Examples:
• 安いし、おいしいし、このレストランが好きです。
　(It's cheap, and delicious - I like this restaurant.)

• 雨も降っているし、寒いし、出かけたくない。
　(It's raining, and cold - I don't want to go out.)

• 日本語も話せるし、漢字も読めます。
　(I can speak Japanese, and I can read kanji too.)

• 時間もないし、お金もないし、無理です。
　(I have no time, and no money - it's impossible.)

Pattern 12: たり～たり (Listing Actions)

Formation:
• Verb (た form) + り + Verb (た form) + り + する

Meaning: "do things like...", "sometimes...sometimes"

Examples:
• 週末は本を読んだり、音楽を聞いたりします。
　(On weekends I do things like read and listen to music.)

• 日本語を勉強したり、友達と話したりしています。
　(I study Japanese and talk with friends, among other things.)

• 天気がいい日は散歩したり、写真を撮ったりする。
　(On nice days I walk and take photos, etc.)

• 泣いたり笑ったりする。
　(Crying and laughing / alternating between crying and laughing.)
